Wales The Land of The Welsh

Cardiff Castle
A street in Bath
As I awoke this morning and stepped out the main door of The Suresh residence....I felt the cool crisp English wind on my face and I turned to David and said it will be a nice day to go for a long drive. So at the spur of the moment he said we will drive to Wales which was about 2 hours drive from Wokingham. So after a quick breakfast and a short stop at the local Tesco for some bites to eat we were on our way in our car...a Proton Gen 2 Ecologic...compliments of Proton UK.

The drive was such a pleasant journey...cruising along the beautiful M4 highway....with sights of sprawling hills and large fields of yellow rapeseed....what a sight to behold. As we were passing some small English towns I noticed a sign pointing to Bath , a city that became a heritage site in 1987. So David took a detour and we were amazed at the beauty of the colonial buildings of Bath which was breathtaking....after some photos....and breathing in the beauty of this city...we moved on with our journey to Wales. And we were welcomed into this country by the beautiful Severn Bridge that connects England and Wales ....and signboards that had English and Welsh..the language of Wales which I did not realise existed.

Upon reaching Cardiff...I realised that the first time I heard about this city was when my oldest niece Sangeetha came here to study law and she met Alvin her husband in this very city. We passed the Cardiff University and it was great because this is where Sangeetha studied and graduated. Well we drove around and then we parked the car...and went for a walk around this beautiful city...and shops in The Hayes...the markets...and then you come to the awesome Cardiff Castle. And after looking for a fridge magnet to add on to my collection..we drove around a bit and headed home.

A day well spent in the Land of the Welsh...the land where the beautiful Catherine Zeta Jones is originated from.

London and The Royal Wedding

Yes I  am  here in London..arrived last night at Heathrow by Qatar Airways after a lovely flight..and was picked by our good friend Simon Suresh in his Lexus and we drove through beautiful scenery with even a glimpse of Windsor Castle at night. And today is a beautiful day...cool weather....and yes the day of the Royal Wedding of William and Catherine...I am blessed to be here on the day a new union begins...a marriage we pray will last. I am visiting London after 16 years and am so glad that I was awaken by the cool weather and Wedding Bells. We are staying with Simon and Marita Suresh and their lovely daughter Simone in a lovely town called Wokingham in the royal county of Berkshire.

Simon and Marie prepared a lovely breakfast of bacon , tortilla , buttered mushrooms , eggs and lovely Vanilla Coffee. So we tucked into it and the boys Simon and David who are not interested in The Wedding have gone out for a drive in Simon's Lexus. And we 3 ladies are seated in the cosy living room and watching the event on television and I could feel every moment of their wedding and their carriage ride to the Palace because I am here and this is happening in the city which is about an hour from here. And I can assure you I feel all the rhythms and sounds of the crowds of the people who are there and feel the euphoria of this historic event.

After watching this beautiful Wedding Simon suggested we go and see a small town called Bucklebury because Kate Middleton is from there. So we went and it was a half hour drive from Wokingham and when we arrived there this town was filled with merry makers celebrating the Wedding because their small town girl is now a Princess. We visited the Church of St Mary the Virgin where the Middletons attend services. The atmosphere was amazing with people all dressed up and walking the streets and partying. It was really great that we visited the hometown of Miss Kate Middleton....now the Princess of Cambridge. This visit made this Royal Wedding Day in London so memorable for me.

Is that time again

Its that time again for David and me...when bags have to be packed...things in the house put in order....bills paid ....clothes cleared from the laundry basket...pantry cupboards stacked for the children....and the list goes on...as we leave home on a long trip this time...a month to be exact. Many have said to me..."Wah you are so lucky always travelling"..."You are a real madam so free"...are some of the phrases used by my friends. My children always remind me..." Mummy this is your hard earned money and not ill gotten money so you should be proud to spend it and do what you love most" and I totally agree with my darling children and husband who encourage me to travel.

Well we make the decisions about what we want to do in our lives as we are masters of our destiny. After all I have worked for 30 years...and supplemented the home income for 26 . And as I said and I will always say I do not want to leave money in the bank to earn interest when I am no more....I want to have lived....and live I will.

God has blessed us with this trip and I thank Him everyday for all His blessings. The following is a preview of where we are going and as we go along I will try to update my blog..till then feast your eyes upon these photos...and get a taste of where we are going.

Lent and Holy Week

It is the most beautiful and spritual time for the Catholic Church....we have already gone through 43 days of Lent today...some of us fast , abstain , pray more , sacrifice something we love , read the Bible daily  and many more. As for me I try to abstain from all kinds of meat every Lent because I love meat...and sometimes I can and sometimes I just cannot...but this year I am glad I managed not to be tempted. This year I am also so glad that I volunteer at the Assumption Soup Kitchen to serve the less fortunate..and I also learnt that its just not a matter of giving up something you love..it is also of praying more and spending time with God and His people...it is also about a change of heart that makes you a better person...forgiveness being the main part of it. And during Lent there must be a transformation and this is what makes a Lenten sacrifice fruitful.

Many of us also put on a 'sad and mournful ' face during Lent because our Saviour had to suffer and die for us..so we do not attend functions because gatherings foster having a good time. This Lent I had a few weddings to attend and birthday parties of loved ones..and I said to myself my God is not going to get angry with me because I am going out of love for these people...so I went and spent time with these friends of ours. And on Palm Sunday after mass , David and I had to take a couple who had come down from Australia to Malacca for the day and we felt good because we did something good for our friends. And yesterday  I had to attend a Graduation Recital of a young lady at her college and she being a Catholic reminded me that it was during Holy Week but I assured her I would come and support her...and she was just so happy I had gone to see her perform...and her parents were so thankful for the love and support too...and I am glad I went. So I feel that Jesus does not want us to 'mourn' but to go out there and do good for His people and make them happy..as He always wants His people to be happy.

Its Holy Thursday today and as a family we go to mass and then we go to a few different churches to stay awhile to pray..and then  tomorrow we celebrate Good Friday by going to service....and Saturday is the day we prepare for Easter Sunday..the most important celebration of the church and spend it together as a family with going to mass and a home cooked meal of our favourite dishes. These few days is the most beautiful time a family can spend together , to pray and appreciate our Lord's sacrifice for us and to celebrate His Resurrection. As I always say  I am glad I am a Cathoilc to experience the different liturgical seasons of the Catholic Church.

All I can say is  that what I learn from Lent and always ...is to remain a good person and we are to spend our life doing good for people never being envious of anyone..and always putting our faith in Christ first ahead of anything else in our life...and then you find everything else is put in place.

Blessed Holy Week and a Blessed Easter to my beautiful family and loved ones.

How much is enough?

It is the Indian New Year today  and that made me write something about how people should  reflect back on life and take a new stand in life.

Many of us go through life as though it is not going to end...but there is an end....The End. We rush through the day...chasing it..and trying to fit so much into one day....and then at the end of the day we say...I wish there are more hours in a day. We must remember we have only this one life God has given to us and we must live our life so that one day when we look back at it...it should not be a life of regret but a life filled with things we have done with love for ourselves and others.

When I was growing up with my parents and brothers..it was filled with ups and downs...fun and laughter...smiles and tears...there was enough money for the 11 of us in the house..I was pampered and never knew what hardship was...I was you can say given everything and everything was done for me by my family as I was the only girl....and yet my parents never made us  once feel  how much they had to go through to feed and clothe the 9 of us..and most of all we were happy with what we had. My parents did not leave any big inheritance for us to fight over at the end of their precious lives and I am glad they did not..because otherwise we would not have learnt how to be independent and stand on our own two feet.

Then when I got married to David I had to leave my big family behind and go and live with my husband in Kuching Sarawak, We had just enough money to survive seeing as to we were both civil servants and then the children came along and we never ever made them feel that we just had enough to pull through the month.... we even gave mini holidays within Malaysia and thanks to David's sister we had holidays in Australia....and we were always happy and contented because we just had enough and the rest we left in God's providence. And till today I tell them I am not going to leave any money for them when I am gone...because I want to see the world with my husband so that one day they can share with their children that we lived life..and not kept the money lying in a bank to earn interest.

Today when I see young people working till late hours to make money and more money just to have a place to stay and have the finer things in life...I feel sad that they are doing this rushing through life's momentum and then forgetting to stop on the way to smell the flowers. When two young people are in love and preparing to get married..they are planning a big expensive wedding...and to top that they have bought a new house and  spending so much for renovations . Phew..thats so much to encompass in one young life. Some young people have even had to die because they were so stressed in life's rat race...dying of heart attacks at a young age..or even dying on the roads because they have that fast car that they worked so hard to get.

And when it comes to parents...I hear that they are sending their kindergarten children for tuition...for heaven's sake...children should grow up as children...running around and playing and enjoying their very young life with their parents and grandparents...not with their domestic helps , babysitters or tuition teachers...while the parents are out there working late and coming home to find that the children have gone to bed. I know we have no choice but to have someone else take care of our children while at work..but do return to them and spend time with them...work will never finish anyway. And this 'kiasu' attitude of  cramming so much into a child's life might just leave these young children broken , confused and  helpless and when we see them go the other way...we shout and ask for help..when it may be too late...because we have driven them that way....away from us.

I just wish people would just stop for awhile and look around and evaluate their lives and see what they want to do with their life...and do it...because life has so much to offer. and always remember when you fall sick its your family who takes care of you not your bosses. And when your life is cut short when you have stressed yourself out at work..the company will just send a huge condolence wreath for your funeral..and yes there is insurance money but you do not get to enjoy it.  So people as my son says " Live life to the fullest , there is plenty of time to be dead "

Yes , money is important to live and can only be made through hard work but do not lose your precious life making it. So we ask ourselves..How much is enough?

A good friend remembered

As I write this , David is on his way to Ipoh to pay his last respects to a friend we met in 1998 during one of our Classic Volvo Runs to Hatyai Thailand . Tan Cher Beng is what you might call a ' regular chinaman ' but with a very big heart...which  stopped beating on the 10th of April 2011. He was Col Lee's ( the then and current President of the Classic Volvo Club  ) sidekick as Andrew would put it and who knew his way around Thailand at the back of his hand....hence why he followed us on all our Volvo trips there.

I never knew him very well but he was a good friend to David and the club members. He would always insist on using his Mercedez Benz for all the reece trips. My earliest memory of him is that he introduced us to the famous Foh San Dim Sum in Ipoh. And ever since then he would ask us to stop in Ipoh everytime we were driving north and he would wait to take us for breakfast to where everyone knew his name. His knowledge of Chinese tea astonished me as he would keep brewing tea with his little utensils if we were to sit with him for a chat at his home.

And as we say goodbye to you  today we say we will miss you especially on our future road trips to Thailand...and as David says Ipoh will be different for us now...and we may have no reason to stop there...as our  friend Tan Cher Beng is no more....but we have all the treasured memories of his company with us on all our trips with the Classic Volvo Club to the Kingdom of Thailand.

May his soul rest in peace eternally.

Andrew Netto is 24

He arrived into this world at 3.49pm on 10th April 1987, after 16 hours of labour pain , his eyes wide open and one week overdue...so he had long fingernails and his skin was peeling...and all I could say was I have a son now...someone to carry the Netto name. He was born 4.1 kg...the biggest baby in the University Hospital Maternity Ward on that day and he instantly  became our son , Melissa's little brother and he had two grandmothers who adored him, his Amechi and Amama and a bunch of cousins , uncles and aunties. I felt the family was complete with a daughter and a son. As a young boy he was rather quiet but as he grew into his teenage years he became the life of every party.

And today he is  a young man of strong physique  6' 2" , very down to earth and practical like his dad. At 15 he did a holiday job at X Fresh Astro , at 16 he went round the world on a trip with his godparents , at 17 he worked with the Hitz Fm Criusers ,at 19 he became a stand up comedian discovered by Harith Iskander and he started earning his own money , at his 21st birthday dinner he launched his own website and today at 24 he is a proud owner of his own BMW 525 i  and is doing well in his career and working towards finishing his degree this year. And as parents and a family we are very proud of him and his achievements.

Son, as a mum all I pray is that you continue to be the young responsible man you are today and always keep your faith as that is the only thing you have with you to form your soul ...everything else is just to be enjoyed here on earth. You are Andrew Netto a Malaysian celebrity but to me you are always my baby boy. Wishing you all God's graces wherever you may go and in all you do...do not forget to thank Him for all His blessings on you.

The Mystical Land of Sri Lanka

Writing about my dad yesterday prompted me to share with you about our trip to Sri Lanka as my dad was born in Colombo in 1920 and later he moved to India and then came to Malaysia to marry my mum.
David and I were blessed to visit Sri Lanka in September 2010.....many asked us why Sri Lanka...the war has not stopped and people are snobbish , its dangerous and the such...but being the 'adventurous us' we went. And why not...we got Air Asia tickets for RM252.00 for both of us...return! And we were so glad we visited this beautiful country.

Our holiday started in Colombo where we landed at the Bandranaike International Airport and we picked up a Kia Sorento and bravely drove into the crowded city. We checked into the heritage Galle Face Hotel...and what an amazing hotel with its verandah facing the Indian Ocean. After leaving our bags in the room we just strolled into the verandah to get a glimpse of the sea...and what beautiful images of  the morning...and the waiters were so kind that they served us hot coffee and tasty hot appams which they refer to as hoppers...you see we were not supposed to be served breakfast as we had just checked in. But guess what the red pottu on my face saved us as many of the waiters were Tamil like me! We also saw a wedding at the hotel with a troop of Kandyan dancers performing. What a treat it was! After which we met my cousin Kantha on my dad's side whom I had never met before and he took us around to see the city and taste the different kinds of food and also met his mum. Colombo is like any other city...crowded...and had many beautiful hotels and shopping complexes. And as evening approached the beach was filled with people and stalls. It was great meeting up with Kantha and we had to say bye as we were off to Kandy the next day.

The next morning we started our journey after a lovely buffet breakfast...the locals said it would take us half a day to drive to Kandy as road conditions were bad. The drive was not  too bad. ..and we stopped along the way to have fresh coconut water for 30sen...bought some earthenware chimes....and we arrived at Kandy the town in the hills in heavy traffic after a 6 hour drive. We made our way to the Thilanka Hotel , another beautiful hotel set in the foothills of the town. This town is situated around the Kandy Lake and the weather is milder. Checked in and went for a walk into the city...the thing that striked me most was the number of pastry shops along the way....and they were lovely pastry too. We saw the ever famous Buddhist Temple of the Tooth Relic where they say that it stores the actual tooth of Buddha and every year they have a grand festival the Esala Perahara which lasts 10 days  in Kandy. The streets of Kandy were busy...with many kinds of shops and markets..and arts and crafts. We went back to the hotel in a 3 wheeler...and the young man who rode it..gave us a ride of a lifetime...absorbing all the sights and sounds of Kandy....it was good fun  though.

The next day after breakfast we made our way to Nuwara Elliya...nicknamed The Little England of Sri Lanka . The drive was really a pleasant one as we stopped along the way for hot tea in the many tea plantations along the way. Tea in a pot was RM1.50 for the both of us...and sipping hot tea with the cool weather around us was just heavenly. After all the stops we made we arrived at Nuwarra Eliya a small town nestled in the hills of Sri Lanka.. situated 1868 meteres above sea level. It welcomed us with cold weather and everyone was smartly dressed in sweaters and jackets...and what a beautiful sight..hence the nickname. We checked into the Windsor Hotel and went for a walk into the town...all kinds of shops and eateries..and horse mounted policemen...shops selling beautiful rice and tea of course. That night we went for dinner at The Grand Hotel Indian Restaurant...it was so cold...but the beautiful spicy food served was very good...and we met some beautiful people from India. The next morning we drove around the town and then we had to make our way back to Colombo. That drive we had was so memorable...vast tea plantations...beautiful landscape...amazing waterfalls...mist falling on to the roads...scenes that are sometimes indescribable. We stopped at St Clair Tea Castle where we learnt the finer details of tea...after spending 2 hours of tasting tea and buying all kinds of tea we made our journey through small roads to Negombo stopping on the way for our coconut drink.

We checked into The Taj Garden Airport Hotel...another beautiful 5 star hotel..living up to its Taj name. We met up with our Malaysian friends Ganesh and Syam who took us to dinner in Negombo...The Little Rome of Sri Lanka as there were so many churches with magnificent statues..a beautiful sight to behold. It was great meeting up with them and we called it a night as we had a early morning flight home. As we checked into our Air Asia flight home...we told ourselves that we will come back to this beautiful land as there was so much more to see and explore. Bye Sri Lanka..till we see you again was our goodbye words to the mystical land they once called Ceylon.

Special in my daddy's eyes

Its been 31 years today since I lost my dad to a massive heart attack ...he was 59 and I was 19. They always say fathers and daughters have something special that no one can understand...and I did have that with my dad. He would call me his princess as I am one among 8 boys in the family....he was very proud of me especially my height as my 5'9" structure towered above his 5'2" stature. In anything I was treated much more special than my brothers....pocket money , clothings , love & affection and even food one might say.

My memories of him and that fatal day is still clear in my head...he had cooked me my lunch after he had returned from a part time job..and I had just returned from teaching at my mum's kindergarten and it seemed like a normal day. After we had eaten... he developed chest pains and I did not know what to do as I was alone with him...and all I could do was ask my neighbour to drive us to the hospital...just then one of my older brothers came home...and I told him to accompany my dad as I had to go inform my mum at her kindergaten. Everything happened so fast and as I closed my mum's kindergarten and went to the hospital to look for her...the attendants told me that my dad had just passed away and my mum had taken him home. At 19 and receiving news like that was devastating...what was my mum going to do..she had just turned 51...what was I going to do with no father...The funeral was held the very next day and being Hindu at that time we had a lot of rites to do....and we were left with my mum to fend for the 9 of us...fortunately the 2 older brothers were already working. And my mum being the amazing lady she was kept us going and got us educated and married and everything else until she left me 10 years later.

If you still have your dad and mum with you , please be patient and treasure them...they might be old and cranky and difficult to handle...but always remember we will also be like that one day and all we would want is for our children  to love and care for us.

I am glad at least God gave me those 19 years with my dad and most of all I thank Him that I was always special in my daddy'e eyes.

Appa rest in peace with God eternally.

Netto Family Holiday 2011

A month ago on March 6th 2011 , David's brother James turned 60 and at this threshold of life we asked him what he wanted to do..and he asked us to take him on a road trip to Thailand as he had not done it ever. So 3 cars with 11 of us...my family of 4...his family of 4...his son Sean's in laws..and my nephew started our Thailand adventure on the 4th of March. We drove from our home in PJ to Ipoh to meet with Chandran and Rebecca and for dim sum at Kao Lee restaurant. What a breakfast...after which we drove to the border where we stopped at Bukit Kayu Hitam to look around the duty free and buy Thai insurance for the cars. After all the clearances at Sadao Immigration Point we drove to Hatyai where we spent the night at Novotel Hotel. Hatyai is a busy town with lots to do...good food...relaxing massages...cheap pedicures and manicures...and great shopping. Dinner was at our usual Restaurant 59 which serves up great authentic Thai food at affordable prices.
The next day we drove to Krabi via Trang and we checked into the Aree Tara Resort on Ao Nang Beach. Krabi is much more touristy now...with lots of mat sallehs...compared to the time when David and I first visited in 2008. The resort was comfortable and just 5 mins from the main shops of Ao Nang. Dinner was great...shopping was good...massages soothing...and we waited  to wish the birthday boy at the stroke of 12 by the beach with bottles of beer and fruit juices. What a way to start off a 60th birthday!
The next day saw the 11 of us renting a boat to go island hopping...and we were so glad we did it. Bamboo Island...Maya Cove...Monkey Island...Viking Bay and of course the ever famous Phi Phi Island. What beautiful islands and views that were etched in our memories for ever. Lunch was at Cosmic Restaurant on Koh Phi Phi and then it was back to Krabi for the birthday dinner at Fish International Restaurant at Ao Nang.
The next day we drove back to Hatyai where we stayed the night and then on the 8th we took a slow drive home after a dinner stop at Ipoh. We bid The Chandrans bye and we all went home safe...and have beautiful memories of a good fun family holiday. Thank you Ach , Gladys , Sean , Priya , Chandran , Rebecca , Sheeven ,David , Mel and Andrew for all the fun and laughter...you all make my life so complete.

Tuesday mornings spent well

In 2009 I joined the Mothers Prayer Group of Assumption Church PJ..a group of 15 amazing mums of all ages and sizes meet every Tuesday morning at 10am to pray for our children and family. We range from the age of 35 to 85 and have gone through life's blessings and turmoils...but we come together as a family to pray for each other's families. A couple of them are widows...some struggling single mums...mums who have lost their children...and others...but when we come together we are just MUMS going through everyday life momentums....but making time to meet and pray. A lot of moving stories...testimonies...blessings and struggles of being mothers are shared in the confines of this small group and we thank God everyday for the gift of motherhood.  Thank you ladies for taking me in as I treasure the vocation of motherhood and marraige...with all of you in my life you have made it easier every day...and thank you to my children Melissa and Andrew for making me a mum to be able to join this dynamic group..and lastly my 'knight in shining armour' David who married me and made all this possible.

Assumption Soup Kitchen

A year ago today I started to volunteer at The Assumption Soup Kitchen...where beautiful food is cooked by beautiful people for beautiful people. It serves about 180 packed food to be distributed to the less fortunate at Desa Mentari and about 70 - 80 people eat at The Assumption Family House where the food is cooked and served. I volunteer on Mondays and Wednesdays...where I meet a group of dedicated ladies...some who are cancer survivors....and I feel proud being amongst them to be serving the less fortunate. Being a lady of leisure now after serving The Government of Malaysia for 30 years....I am now very contented with what I am doing and of course in between all that ....travelling. I have to thank my dear husband and children for helping me make this dream of mine come true...to serve God's people with the time He has given me.

Macau / Hong Kong 2011

Well I did say my hobby is travelling..so our first trip for 2011 was a 4 day trip to Macau and Hong Kong...actually our very first taste of China....'our' meaning me and my soulmate/ travel buddy David . I take him on all my trips...he is great company. On February 25th Macau welcomed us with beautiful cool weather of about 15 degrees...we checked into the Macao Regency Hotel on Taipa Island. A 4 star hotel with comfortable rooms facing the harbour. We took the hotel shuttle into the city and it was just amazing to see how much of Portuguese influence there is in Macau..road signs..department names...and even the little avenues were paved with glazed mosaic tiles..and yet the locals do not speak a word of the language. We spent the day walking around Senado Square and its surroundings and of course the iconic St Pauls Ruins. Had the ever famous Portuguese tarts , curry fish balls , barbequed pork and almond biscuits. Its funny how when you mention Macau everyone thinks of only the casinos...but they have beautiful 16th century churches that were built by the Portuguese namely the St Dominic's Church...the casinos are only for people who do not have a life!
A day trip saw us taking a hydrofoil turbo jet to Hong Kong from the Macau Ferry Terminal..what a piece of equipment..it was such a smooth one hour journey as you cannot feel the waves..it was like being on a plane! Hong Kong can be summarised into one word...BUSY. The city is filled with  iconic tall buildings...so we took the MTR to Mongkok to feel the real rhythm of Hong Kong. And yes we did feel it..the hustle and bustle of the streets really was something to experience...visited the day markets to get souveniers...had a lovely lunch at an authentic Hong Kong Restaurant....the people walk fast and even the escalators move at a pace that might throw you off....and we later took the ferry back to Macau that night after snapping some photos.
The next two days saw us pacing around Macau City..Fisherman's Wharf....the fabulous hotels...The Venetian...City of Dreams...The Grand Lisbao Hotel..The Sands Hotel...Wynn Hotel...MGM Grand...had authentic Portuguese food and the lot.
Personally I found Hong Kong too busy for me...Macau was much nicer with a beautiful pace of life..but what was etched in my mind were the beautiful churches...and the magnificent weather we had for 4 days. We bid Macau farewell on the 28th of February and boarded our Air Asia flight home.
